REGISTERED SPECIALIST TOUR GUIDES

All the guides listed are members of the Tourist Guides Association of KwaZulu-Natal (Battlefields Region) and are experts in their particular fields with many years’ experience.

Paul Garner

A guide with 20 years experience leading tours in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana, including exhibitions in search of the Lost City of the Kalahari. These tours go under the unlikely names of The Lost Trails of Zululand and The Sounds of Beethoven in the Bush. He has an abiding passion for Africa, its history, fauna and flora, with a special interest in Birding, Battlefields and Rock Art. He is an honorary officer of KZN Wildlife, an active member of The Wildlife and Environmental Society, The Endangered Wildlife Trust, Birdlife South Africa and the South African Archaeological Society. He is also a lay minister in his local church.

Rob Gerrard FRGS

A former British army officer, is resident historian at Isandlwana Lodge, and a highly qualified battlefields guide who gives compelling and passionate accounts of the battles of the Anglo Zulu and Anglo Boer Wars. He has a great enthusiasm for sharing the culture of the Zulu people and areas of Zululand with guests.

Evan Jones

Registered specialist battlefields guide for 11 years. He covers all military conflicts throughout the province and is also a provincial guide. He has lived in Dundee for 36 years and knows the area intimately. With Evan you will re-live the drama and bravery of battles lost and won, interspersed with strange and sometimes laughable stories about people and events.

Mike Nel

Grew up in Northern KwaZulu-Natal and has always been interested in Zulu culture. After twenty years service in the coal mining industry and a close working relationship with Zulu men, he retired. He now regularly conducts tours into rural Zululand. With his ability to speak fluent Zulu, these tours into Zulu homes and family life are an experience not to be missed. He regularly conducts tours to Isandlwana, Rorkes Drift and is a resident tour guide at Talana Museum.

Tony Roberts

A specialist guide that will take you to top birding spots in the country. He has over 20 years experience in a conservation organization and has been birding for most of his life. He also has an excellent knowledge of top game reserves for photographic and game viewing tours. He is a member of Birdlife South Africa and the Wildlife Environment Society of South Africa.

Pat Rundgren

Has operated for over 10 years as a registered military specialist guide in the Dundee area. Formerly in the Rhodesian Security Services, Pat is a collector of militaria and has just completed his second book. He regularly contributes articles to overseas military history and collectors magazines. He organizes adventure tours, hikes, white water rafting, Zulu cultural and battlefields tours.

Foy Vermaak

Was born and grew up in this once turbulent area. He has accumulated a comprehensive knowledge of the history and customs over the past 50 years. He is a soft-spoken man, but the manner in which he tells his tales grips the imagination of the listener and makes the events of the battlefields come alive. An English, Afrikaans and Zulu linguist.
