Birds and Wildlife
The true magic of Rorke’s Drift Lodge really lies in the essence of Africa. We are essentially an African destination, and with that comes all the accoutrements of Africa. In our little bit of heaven we harbour many a resident who has, quite naturally, come to be a part of Rorke’s Drift Lodge.
In our gardens we have counted more than 120 different species of birds that at different times of the year can be found flitting from branch to branch. The Paradise Flycatcher, the Scarlet Chested Sunbird, the Groundscraper Thrush, and many more have made their home here. We are incredibly fortunate to have a family of Ground Hornbills that has been breeding non-stop for the past seven years. We have watched their family grow each year since were opened our doors. Indeed the family has got so big that six of the children now forage on their own and the parents now only have the last two offspring to care for.
In the last eighteen months we have also had a breeding herd of Impala settle on our property and of course the ever present Kudu still roam the property.
Other naturally occurring wildlife includes, Blackback Jackals, Porcupine, Warthogs, Wild Pigs, Mountain Reedbuck, Common Reedbuck, Grey Duiker, Serval, Spotted Gennets, African Wildcats, Lynx and even a very elusive Leopard.
